What makes Durham beautiful to you? | Para ti, ¿qué es lo que hace a Durham hermoso?

"Durham has a rich and deep history that makes up the bones and soul of this city. From the thriving entrepreneurial spirit of Black Wall Street, the cultural Hayti Center, the Pauli Murray Museum, the first sit ins by the Royal 7 at The Royal Ice Cream Company, and so much more. And over more recent generations the Latinx community has added so much to our foundations. Now the majority of the students at Durham Public Schools are Latinx. At the same time our city is one of innovation and thinking, with world class universities and research institutions. We have so many assets that can push our community forward to becoming a more equitable place where every person has a chance to flourish. That energy is what makes this city beautiful and has persisted over generations and influxes of new residents. The challenge is doing it. That energy is what makes Durham a place where an immigrant woman can start a business with $75 and no credit on a bike to three coffee shops and a roastery, and it is the energy has allowed us to survive through this pandemic.

I love living in a city where there is not just one bustling Supermercado but three, and one of them has a whole parking lot that is dedicated to throwing community oriented events to help raise fund for its community members. I love that we have so many independent locally owned businesses and restaurants and just as much that we have immigrant owned food trucks and goods stalls at places like the Green Flea Market. We have so much beauty and really need to double down to use all that we have to achieve the dreams of all in our community."

In what ways has the Hispanic community displayed strength in this challenging time? | ¿De que forma la comunidad hispana muestra su solidaridad en estos momentos difíciles?

English:

"Before saying more I want to acknowledge how diverse our Latinx community is. We used to live in an apartment on West Trinity and in our small building there were people of several Latin American nations, many who also spoke indigenous languages, and some who identified as Afro-Latinx. It's easy to clump people together, but in truth we are such a beautiful diversity of people and culture who do so much of the work that props up and pushes our society forward. We are people with so many talents, many having the common traits of being resourceful, with many innovative entrepreneurs, city council members, lawyers, social workers, translators, wellness coaches, filmmakers and the list goes on. That being said, just surviving is showing so much strength. Our gente (people) are going to work, putting themselves and their families at risk to keep them safe and fed, and some are navigating homeschooling their bilingual kids in a language foreign to them. Our gente always makes it work though and that is their resilience on full display."

"Antes de decir más, quiero reconocer cuán diversa es nuestra comunidad Latinx. Solíamos vivir en un departamento en West Trinity y en nuestro pequeño edificio había gente de varias naciones latinoamericanas, muchos que también hablaban lenguas indígenas y algunos que se identificaban como afrolatinx. Es fácil agrupar a las personas, pero en verdad somos una diversidad tan hermosa de personas y culturas que hacen gran parte del trabajo que apuntala e impulsa a nuestra sociedad hacia adelante. Somos personas con tantos talentos, muchos con los rasgos comunes de ser ingeniosos con muchos emprendedores innovadores, miembros del consejo municipal, abogados, trabajadores sociales, traductores, entrenadores de bienestar, cineastas y la lista continúa.Dicho esto, el hecho de solo sobrevivir muestra mucha fuerza. Nuestra gente va a trabajar, poniéndose a sí mismos y a sus familias en riesgo para mantener a ambos seguros y alimentados, y algunos están navegando por primera vez la educación en el hogar para sus hijos bilingües en un idioma extranjero para ellos. She uses her ingenuity and determination to bolster community through commerce and service, while supporting a sustainable, democratic, and artistic way of being.
