What makes Durham beautiful to you? | Para ti, ¿qué es lo que hace a Durham hermoso?

"For me, what makes Durham beautiful is its diversity, and the great people who have come together to make it better. When I moved to Durham from Colombia, South America, I didn't know anybody. But I started meeting people from here and other nationalities who made my life, and my daughter's life, much easier while we were learning a new lifestyle, new language, and a new culture - while still keeping our own. Despite the lack of knowledge of each other, we were able to share our differences and commonalities to share life. In addition, the landscape of Durham brings such a pleasure; to have the comfort of a city, and the pleasure of nature."

"Para mi, lo que hace a Durham hermosa es su diversidad y cómo personas increíbles se unen para mejorarla. Cuando me vine de Colombia, Sur América, a vivir a Durham, no conocía a nadie pero empecé a conocer personas de acá y de otras nacionalidades que ayudaron a que nuestras vidas fueran mucho más fáciles mientras aprendíamos de un nuevo estilo de vida, un nuevo idioma y una nueva cultura mientras manteníamos lo nuestro. A pesar de que no nos conocíamos fuimos capaces de compartir nuestras diferencias y cosas en común para compartir la vida. Adicionalmente, el paisaje de Durham es un placer ya que puedes disfrutar de las comodidades de una ciudad mientras puedes disfrutar también de los placeres de la naturaleza."

In what ways has the Hispanic community displayed strength in this challenging time? | ¿De que forma la comunidad hispana muestra su solidaridad en estos momentos difíciles?

English:

"I think in the way that some members of the community unified efforts to support each other, and also how some were creative to continue working and finding new ways to make a living. As a community, we have shown one more time our resilience and positivism to see life and confront the adverse situations."

"Creo que los Hispanos hemos mostrado fortaleza en estos tiempos difíciles en la manera en que nos hemos unido para apoyarnos unos a otros y también para continuar trabajando y para encontrar nuevas maneras de ganarse la vida. Una vez más hemos mostrado nuestra resiliencia y nuestro positivismo de ver la vida y enfrentar situaciones adversas."

Pilar Rocha-Godberg is the President and CEO of El Centro Hispano, a Latino nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the community, building bridges, and advocating for equity and inclusion for Hispanics/Latinos in the Triangle Area of North Carolina. She is also a member of the Durham Recovery & Renewal Task Force, working to help the community and elected officials navigating the pandemic.
