Hispanic & Latino
Ciudad Del Toro (Bull City)
The Hispanic and Latino community in Durham has roots originating in 33 countries, each with distinct histories and languages.
The Bull City’s diverse roots are deep, and the culture of all Durham residents is celebrated each day. As NBC News highlighted in “Tobacco to tortillas,” Durham has embraced its growing Hispanic community. From a growing population of Latino and Latina entrepreneurs and business owners to flourishing restaurants and faith-based gathering places, Durham is cultivating its Hispanic heritage.
Rodridgo Dorfman is a native of Santiago, Chile, a Durhamite, and a multimedia award-winning filmmaker and producer. In ¡FIESTA! Quinceañera, a six-part digital series, Dorfman used his craft to illuminate precious and diverse facets of the Hispanic community. A collaborative effort between Nuevo South Media and PBS Digital Studios, Dorfman directed and produced the Durham-based series to cast light on the lives of four Latin American immigrant families in the New South. This compelling series tells the story of Durham’s Hispanic community directly from the storyteller.
