Bullock's Bar-B-Cue
Phone: (919) 383-3211
In the 1940s, Glen Bullock started selling his barbecue door-to-door. Years later, he would join forces with his wife Lillian, a skilled cook and baker, to open the original Bullock’s Bar-B-Cue. Their restaurant is a well-loved, family-owned and operated fixture in Durham serving family-style all-you-can-eat barbecue pork and fried chicken. Pair your barbecue with coleslaw, string beans, fries or hushpuppies. (Also, the restaurant is cash only, so make sure to bring those bills!)

We went here for lunch on a Friday, it was very busy but we were promptly waited on and our food came out quick. You could tell this is a smoothly run operation. The hush-puppies came out hot and fresh, they were very good, basic hush-puppies, not too sweet, not too salty. I had a #8 combo plate, it comes with BBQ pork, fried chicken and Brunswick stew, I substituted Collards for the Coleslaw. Everything was very good, the fried chicken was moist and tender and the breading was crispy. The BBQ and the Brunswick stew were both excellent. The Collards were very good. It was first time here and I knew immediately this is the real deal! I will definitely be back, so many things on the menu I want to try. The service was quick, friendly, food was amazing, prices were reasonable. I highly recommend Bullock's Bar-B-Que if you're in the mood for traditional NC BBQ made right! -
Stopped in for dinner today. Was looking for some authentic Durham NC. Barbecue, we found it! The walls were covered with all the famous people who have dined here.
I have to say my ribs were the best. Tender, juicy full of flavor. The chicken had a good crunch but was moist and tender inside. I saved my brisket sandwich for a snack later. Didn't want to stuff myself. My daughter enjoyed her Barbecue, cold slaw and veggie.
Her fish came out over cooked and was quickly replaced by the Manager plus another fillet. Over all great experience, wonderful crowd of regulars which we were happy to see!
Thank you, we'll done.
Satisfied our goal! -
Unfortunately, our experience with Bullock’s Bar-B-Cue during our Teacher Appreciation Week luncheon was extremely disappointing. What was meant to be a special celebration for our hardworking teachers became stressful and upsetting after discovering the chicken was undercooked. Serving unsafe food at a catered event is unacceptable, especially when the event is intended to honor staff who give so much every day.
As a school and organization that values supporting and patronizing local businesses, this experience was especially disheartening. We chose to invest in a local establishment hoping for quality service and care, and unfortunately that was not our experience. It truly turned what should have been a joyful and memorable celebration into a horrible memory for our team. -
I believe this is the best briscuit I have ever had.
I didn't grow up with bbq, so not sure I'm an expert, but the briscuit was tender and without annoyingly noticeable fat/gristle (i.e., it had just enough good, tasty fat). The hushpuppies were good and I finished my son's ribs at the end of the week and they were meaty and delicious.
The service was friendly all around and fast. I live 3 hours away from Durham. It might be worth the drive just for a meal. -
Was recommended to dine here by a local while I was on a roundtrip roadtrip from Houston to DC.
This place was a really special and memorable stop to me for my roadtrip. The staff treated us so warmly and well. Maybe it's because we were filming but boy did I feel like I was dining at a friend's house and being served by their mother.
Food was served hot and portions were generous. I'm from Texas so it was cool to experience Carolina BBQ. Great value for the price too.
The owner was even kind enough to spend some time speaking with us.
If you remember me, I would still love to see your restaurant offer EV charging stations. It could drive more traffic to you and I know there were at least two EVs when I was there dining. If you bring in just 2 new customers a day spending what we spent ($50), you'd generate $30K+ in new revenue and pay off the cost of installing 2 charging ports in 1 year.
Google Maps automatically routes people to EV chargers so having them at an established restaurant with good reviews like yours, could be a great way to increase revenue.
Please reach out to Pangea Charging if you'd like to discuss further.
