If you haven’t tried the iconic Southern staple of chicken and waffles, you may be wondering what makes it so special. When you try Dame’s Chicken and Waffles, you’ll understand. Their combination of crispy chicken, fluffy waffles, caramel drizzle and sweet schmears make a perfect meal for any time of day. Not sure where to start? Try their light brown leghorns complete with four drumsticks and a side of your choice. We'd be remiss not to advise you on 'schmears,' too -- sweet creme butters delicately whipped with the freshest natural ingredients. Our advice? Try them all.

Out of towner review! Some of the best chicken I’ve had in awhile. Everything was great. The Mac and cheese and greens were top tier. Customer service was great too. This was my first time and I’m not sure if it was the manager ? But he was helpful in making sure I knew about the menu. I come to Durham about once a month and I’m mad nobody has told me about this spot. I’ll definitely be back everytime I’m in the city!

I went the simple route with just a waffle, scrambled eggs, and bacon. They were all good. The rest of our group had chicken and waffles and said that the chicken was delicious. Server was awesome.

This was a cute spot, the ambience was nice. Chicken appeared to be overcooked. As I looked around the restaurant at other folks chicken theirs appeared to be overcooked as well. Not sure if it's the batter they use or what. The collard greens were good. Not sure why I assumed the pickles were fried, that was my fault for not getting clarification but they were regular pickles with a seasoning on them. They were just blah nothing special about them. Service was pretty slow. It seems that they were short staffed.

Pros: 1) Dame's has the best chicken and waffles I've ever tasted. 2) Cocktails are fabulous. 3) Mac and cheese is well seasoned. Con: The service is quite lackluster. After we were seated, we waited for over thirty minutes for our server to appear and take our order. In the meantime, the two parties who were seated after us already had their servers giving them their drinks and placing their orders. For context, we made sure to come after the Saturday brunch rush around 1:30 pm. About 1/3 of the restaurant had open tables so it was not terribly busy. Not sure if this is something a lot of other folks have experienced. Overall, the food outweighed the wait time. I would still come back again, but I would plan extra time to account for all of the waiting.

The food is amazing. The waffle with vanilla almond butter and Calypso drizzle are a breathtaking combination. The chicken cutlet is fried and seasoned to perfection. The food is worth the price of admission, the customer service, not so much. There was an actual issue with sending back a side order of mac n’ cheese. If an item is not to the standard of the customer, it is the establishment’s obligation to make sure the customer is taken care of without apprehension. The manager begrudgingly brings over a replacement side dish, and this ruined the experience, as he chastises us claiming “the recipe has been the same for 14 years.”

If you’ve been you know their chicken and waffles comes any way you want it and is perfection. You need to go. No questions, just go. You’ll thank me. For me service and atmosphere is pretty mid, but it’s clean and friendly so you can do a lot worse. I live for Mac&Cheese, and always get it when visiting anywhere in the south. For year it was choice here and I would use up all my side slots for it, but in the last few it’s really fallen off. It’s become soupy instead of cheesy so it’s just not worth it. 💔
