Its location makes it feel like a hidden gem. The service and other patrons were so friendly. I loved I could work from the shop with my dog inside. My matcha drink and granola bar were delicious.

The Americano ($3.75) arrives like liquid architecture - bold, structured, yet surprisingly graceful. Each sip reveals why locals queue here with the patience of British pensioners at a post office. The espresso-to-water ratio isn't just balanced; it's diplomatic, bringing peace between intensity and drinkability.
The space itself is a masterclass in modern café design. A theatrical orange circle dominates one wall like a caffeinated sun, while Scrabble-tile menu boards spell out offerings with playful gravitas. Progressive pride flags and vintage coffee posters create an atmosphere that's both zeitgeist and timeless, rather like finding a vinyl record shop in Shoreditch that also sells NFTs.
The industrial ceiling ductwork plays peek-a-boo with track lighting, while pastel color-blocking on the walls suggests someone's Pinterest board achieved sentience and excellent taste. Even the outdoor seating - cherry-red chairs that wouldn't look out of place in a Wes Anderson film - seems to wink at passersby.
At around $6 for specialty drinks (the Toffee Oat Latte being their pièce de résistance at $6.50), prices sit comfortably in the "treat yourself without telling your accountant" category. A water bowl for dogs completes the picture - because what's a proper café without four-legged critics?
The verdict? While other coffee shops try to reinvent the wheel, Eva Lou Coffee has simply perfected it. Do yourself a favour: skip the chain cafés and their algorithmic attempts at atmosphere. Head here instead, where the coffee is more stronger, the vibes are stronger, and even the tiger artwork seems to purr with approval.
Must try: The Americano - it's like a liquid hug for your taste buds, minus the awkward goodbye.

very friendly barista, I had heard they have a great chai latte, so of course i stopped in. they are only open til 2pm. ordered a large chai with oat milk (hot) and they added plenty of extra cinnamon which was tasty. decent environment inside, they play good music, and there are several seating options. glad to know this place exists (best chai in Durham as of this writing Jan 2025)

Espresso was excellent. Cute cafe with nice staff. Be warned there aren't lots of seats, so I would avoid on a busy day. Otherwise highly recommend.

My favorite coffee shop in Durham. Great coffee and run by great people. Oat milk by default for all their handcrafted beverages, but you can opt for dairy if you prefer.
Their seasonal and specialty drinks are always outstanding.

Coffee is good and it’s cute inside. When we arrived, the person on staff was outside basically being groped by their partner. We didn’t know they were the employee until they came in to serve us, which they seemed pretty annoyed about lol.

* The Mission: EverLou is committed to creating a safe and inclusive space for everyone. They also prioritize sustainability and community involvement. You can see the full outside tables while you walk by on busy Mangum st.
Some things to keep in mind:
* Limited food options: While they do offer pastries from local bakeries, the selection is small and may not be enough for a full meal. Who wants to eat a lot when you can socialize with friends.

This is our new favorite coffee shop! The coffee, service, and vibe are all great. All the drinks are oat milk-based, but they do make drinks with regular milk on request. Small but really good pastry selection - including gluten free options. The oat milk is also gluten free. We have a family member with celiac disease; we consistently feel safe eating/drinking here and have never had an issue with accidental exposure to gluten.

The moment my friend and I walked into this coffee shop, we were greeted by an extremely friendly barista who excitedly explained all the drinks to us. She couldn’t have been kinder and made us feel so welcomed. The shop itself is quaint and very cute and the coffee was absolutely delicious. Perfect place if you are vegan or have a dairy allergy because all their drinks come with oat milk! They do have other milk options available. We will definitely be back to EverLou and highly recommend it to anyone in the area! :)
