Free-Soil Haven: The Revolutionary Spirit of Hayti
Free-Soil Haven: The Revolutionary Spirit of Hayti is a 90-minute, 1-square-mile journey through the Hayti neighborhood inspired by the lives of Durham's freedom seekers. Visitors will listen to stories and be inspired by the industrious and civic contributions Hayti's foremothers and forefathers made to the development of the City's largest African American residential and commercial district.
Aya Shabu and Conductors share first-person monologues, embodiments, and songs to celebrate the neighborhood's emancipation strategies. Visitors will hear the stories of those in tobacco manufacturing, the beauty culture industry, civic life, and from Highway 147 - a symbol of progress to some and displacement to others.
